what causes a UTI?

A UTI happens when a growth of harmful bacteria builds up in your urinary tract — kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra. Harmful bacteria have arms that make it easy for them to stick to the walls of your urinary tract where they can multiply and cause an infection.

frequent UTIs and women

A woman has a 50% chance of getting a UTI in her lifetime vs a 3% chance for men. And at least one in ten women have three or more UTIs a year! The reason is anatomy. Women tend to have a shorter urethra ─ the tube connected to the bladder that leads urine out of the body ─ which makes it easier for bacteria to enter the bladder and cause infection.
